The pilgrimage begins with the decision to depart, explore sacred places, and participate in sacred rites and liturgies. This is a profound experience of conversion that brings us closer to God and to others who are also seeking a better future. As described in Leviticus 25, the Holy Year is a time of atonement and mercy, a time to forgive debts, seek reconciliation, and embrace conversion.

In Rome, the opening of the Holy Doors in the major basilicas marks the beginning of the Jubilee. By passing through these doors, pilgrims receive special graces and the opportunity to obtain the Jubilee Plenary Indulgence.

Outside of Rome, bishops designate certain churches as Special Places of Prayer during the Jubilee Year. These sites become pilgrimage locations where the faithful can receive a Plenary Indulgence by meeting specific conditions such as prayer, confession, and communion.
